Frequently Asked Questions

Brand Philosophy & Core Sourcing

What is the philosophy behind Sweet Botanicals?

We believe in a grounded, practical approach to zero-waste living. Sustainability shouldn't mean rigid perfectionism; instead, it is about making intentional, conscious choices that balance ecological impact with everyday human ethics and personal bandwidth. We design every formula to serve as a physical solution to a zero-waste lifestyle without compromising on luxury or performance.

How do you source your raw ingredients?

We utilize a strict Three-Tier Sourcing Framework to ensure ultimate supply chain resilience, purity, and ethical accountability across all core raw materials (such as our local beeswax, cold-pressed lipids, and plant extracts). By combining hyper-local regional sources, ethically audited micro-farms, and direct-trade international cooperatives, we prioritize clean, reliable, and sustainable suppliers at every stage.

The Waterless Philosophy & Formulations

What is anhydrous skincare, and why is it better for my skin?

Anhydrous simply means "containing no water." Standard commercial skincare products are often composed of 70% to 90% water, which acts as a cheap filler. Because water breeds bacteria, those brands are forced to pack their formulas with harsh synthetic preservatives and chemical emulsifiers that can disrupt your skin barrier.

By completely eliminating water, Sweet Botanicals delivers 100% active, nutrient-dense formulations. Every single drop is packed with pure botanical lipids, rich antioxidants, and high-performance isolates. You aren't paying for water; you are receiving pure skin nutrition. Without liquid dilution, every single drop works harder—allowing each application to require only a fraction of what you’d typically use, so a single bottle stretches remarkably far.

Does waterless skincare mean my skin won't get hydrated?

Not at all. Typical water-based lotions quickly evaporate off the skin's surface, often taking your natural moisture with them. Our anhydrous formulas deliver vital lipid matrices that mimic your skin's natural sebum, sealing in your body’s existing moisture to prevent transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and repair the skin barrier. For maximum results, simply apply a few drops of serum to slightly damp skin right out of the shower or cleansing routine.

Are your ingredients natural?

Yes. Our formulas focus exclusively on pure plant lipids, potent botanical extracts, unrefined waxes, and targeted essential oils.

Because bacteria and mold require water to grow, our completely waterless (anhydrous) formulas eliminate the need for harsh synthetic antimicrobial preservatives entirely. Instead, we focus on lipid stability: we meticulously formulate with a precise 1.5% concentration of natural mixed Vitamin E to shield delicate botanical oils from oxidation, maintaining peak freshness and stability completely naturally.

What is the shelf life of an anhydrous formula?

Because our formulations contain zero water, they are inherently highly stable and naturally resistant to microbial growth. Our serums, balms, and salves have an unopened shelf life of 24 months. Once opened, we recommend using the product within 12 months.

To maximize potency and longevity, store your bottles in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. When dipping into our solid balms, ensure your hands are dry—since our formulas intentionally omit synthetic antimicrobial preservatives, keeping external water out protects the product's natural purity and prevents unwanted bacteria or mold.

Why does the color or scent of my product vary slightly between orders?

We work exclusively with unrefined, cold-pressed lipids and raw, wild-harvested botanicals—never synthetic dyes or chemical bleaching agents. Because our ingredients naturally reflect the agricultural realities of the earth, subtle seasonal shifts occur. For example, our local Maryland beeswax shifts subtly in hue depending on what the regional honeybees were foraging during that exact harvest season. These variances are a visual badge of honor—proof that your skincare is raw, living, and unadulterated.

Sizes, Packaging & The Refill Program

Why not just use plastic bottles for your serums and balms?

Standard plastic is permeable, allowing oxygen to slowly seep in and degrade raw botanical nutrients. Also, anhydrous plant lipids and concentrated oils can act as natural solvents, creating a risk of microplastic particles and phthalates leaching into the formulation over time. Housing our products strictly in glass and aluminum ensures zero oxygen transfer, zero leaching, and 100% formula purity.

What sizes do your serums come in?

To optimize packaging efficiency, minimize carbon shipping weight, and eliminate material waste, our Face Serum is available in a versatile 2oz size, and our nourishing Body Serum is available in a 4oz size.

What products use the Refill System?

Our zero-waste glass bottle refill system is built around our 2oz and 4oz face and body serums. When you buy your initial serum, it arrives with a reusable, professional-grade treatment pump. When you run low, simply order a "Refill" serum online. You will receive the exact same glass bottle, this time, safely sealed with a 100% recyclable aluminum shipping cap. Simply transition your original pump over to the new refill bottle, keeping your routine completely circular.

What if my treatment pump breaks or wears out?

Our treatment pumps are professional-grade and engineered to be reused across many refills. However, if your pump stops working or breaks over time, standalone replacement pumps are available for purchase on our site for a nominal fee. Charging a small fee helps us cover material costs and discourages unnecessary plastic waste, keeping our circular model truly sustainable.

Are your solid balms and melts part of the Refill System?

No. To optimize inventory and minimize carbon shipping weight, our solid products use specialized standalone packaging. Our waterless balms and salves arrive in infinitely recyclable standalone aluminum tins, while our bombs and melts are housed in 100% plastic-free, compostable wrap.

Shipping, Testing & Disposal

How do your waterless formulas perform in high-heat transit environments?

We know that mail trucks and sorting facilities can reach extreme temperatures during peak summer transit. To ensure formula safety, our products undergo high-heat testing—confirming that thermal exposure will not cause oil separation, oxidation, or active nutrient degradation.

Because we do not to use synthetic wax hardeners or chemical stabilizers, our solid balms/salves and thick serums may soften or liquefy if left in a hot mailbox. Rest assured: softening does not diminish the efficacy or quality of your product.

How to reset: Simply place the closed product in the refrigerator for 20 to 30 minutes to solidify. Afterward, allow it to return to room temperature before use—this is especially essential for our serums, as ambient room temperature restores their fluid, silky viscosity for effortless application.

What are your plastic-free shipping standards?

Our commitment to zero-waste extends straight to the box that arrives on your doorstep. We operate a 100% plastic-free shipping pipeline. Your orders are packed using raw, unbleached corrugated boxes, sealed with compostable tape, and cushioned using compostable paper products. You will never find plastic bubble wrap, synthetic packing peanuts, or plastic laminates in a Sweet Botanicals shipment.

How do I responsibly recycle or compost Sweet Botanicals packaging?

We design our circular packaging so that disposing of it takes zero effort:

  • Serums (Glass Bottles): Keep your pump for your next refill! The empty glass bottle can either be cleanly recycled in your local curbside glass bin or saved for your own upcycle.
  • Balms & Salves (Aluminum Tins): Our aluminum tins are infinitely recyclable. Once empty, give them a quick wash with warm, soapy water and toss them directly into your standard curbside recycling bin, or save for your own upcycle.
  • Bath Bombs/Shower Melts (Paper Packaging): Our compostable paper structures are 100% backyard-compostable and curbside recyclable. You can shred them straight into your home compost pile or place them cleanly with your household paper recycling.
